The purpose of this article is to centralize the recommendations and types of optimal physical activities to improve functional capacity and reduce the side effects of overloads, of non-recommended physical activities, as well as to find their “optimal dose”, the type, duration and appropriate intensity, as general recommendations and later, customised ones. This meta-analysis has, among other goals, the role of discovering the studies that were published in this field and establishing the importance and effectiveness of the type of physical effort and the imminent differences between individuals, depending on age, gender, pathologies, physical need, resistance and individual strength, taking into consideration the desire to have a healthy and active lifestyle. We aim to find the relationship between exercise dose and mortality by reviewing the relevant epidemiologic literature underlying current physical activity guideline recommendations and to critically examine recent data on the impact of exercise dose in healthy adults, as well as contraindications of pathologies. Finally, we provide a framework for how key concepts of exercise dose can be integrated into clinical practice.
