“Synoptic Medicine (Tongchal Medicine)” is a concept contrasted with “Observational Medicine.” While Observational Medicine relies on an analytical methodology based on a reductionist ontology and representational epistemology—which assumes that facts are reflected as they are—Synoptic Medicine moves beyond the subject-object dichotomy. It emphasizes the integration of discourse and clinical practice, pursuing a relation-centered ontology rather than an object-centered ontology that objectifies the body. Although this study originates from the perspective of traditional Korean medicine, its purpose is to articulate and establish the universal medical principles of Synoptic Medicine. This paper elucidates the ecological meaning of Synoptic Medicine through a quadruple framework of “processuality,” “topologicality,” “relationality,” and “communality.” Furthermore, it proposes future research agendas for establishing the cological transversality of Synoptic Medicine through a diffractive approach inspired by Karen Barad’s new Materialism.
