Evidence On Peer Learning in Clinical Nursing Education in an Undergraduate Nursing Programme: A Scoping Review

Wankasi, I. H., Edoni, E. E. · African Journal of Health, Nursing and Midwifery · 2025

This study aimed at mapping current evidence on peer learning in clinical education and exploring teaching models that integrate theory into practical skills in undergraduate nursing education. A five-step scoping review was conducted, guided by the PICOS framework. The researchers searched databases, including Ebscohost, SAE publications, CINAHL, Wiley Online, and Google Scholar, for relevant studies published between 2013 and 2020. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework was used to identify eligible articles, focusing on clinical nursing education and peer learning. Seven key themes emerged: mentor/preceptorship, supervision, training, consultation, partnership, model development, and feedback. Conclusion: The findings addressed knowledge gaps and are expected to inform policy-making and the design of programs that promote peer learning and improve the integration of theoretical knowledge into clinical practice.
