Ethosomes as alternative delivery systems of active substances in cosmetics

, Jessica Plona, Radosław Starosta, · Aesthetic Cosmetology and Medicine · 2025

Ethosomes are a specific type of phospholipid vesicles (liposomes) distinguished by the presence of ethanol in their composition. Thanks to the synergy of ethyl alcohol and lipids, they gain a unique ability to penetrate the stratum corneum. The article aimed to characterize ethosomes as an innovative delivery system, focusing on their structure and mechanism of action. Both the benefits and limitations of their use were presented, as well as prospects for further development. Ethosomes are considered as one of the most promising solutions in the field of transdermal delivery of active substances. Their potential is recognized in pharmacology and cosmetology, as they effectively transport active ingredients such as antioxidants and azelaic acid.
