Abstract Periodontal disease and alveolar pyorrhea caused by oral bacteria are still an unsolved issue. There are approximately 1000 types of bacteria living in the oral cavity, and their eradication is extremely difficult. Oral bacteria causes periodontal disease, alveolar pyorrhea, and several serious systemic diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AzD) and type 2 diabetes. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a representative bacterium, and causes AzD, is resistant to oxidation, making eradication difficult. The sensitivity of P. gingivalis to ultraviolet light has been demonstrated, and new possibilities for oral sterilization are explored. We discuss the prospects of new treatment strategies for oral bacterial diseases.
