Training programs in old age psychiatry throughout Europe

The European population is ageing, with a projected increase in the number of elderly individuals leading to a higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders among this demographic. To address this issue, the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) established a working group focused on postgraduate training in psychiatry. Old Age Psychiatry (OAP), a subspecialty dealing with psychiatric disorders in individuals over 65 years old, requires a multidisciplinary approach due to the complex nature of these cases. This paper reviews the training curricula for psychiatric residents in OAP across Europe, highlighting the need for harmonization to ensure consistent standards of care. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were systematically reviewed, yielding five relevant articles focusing on OAP training in Europe. The review revealed variations in the recognition and duration of OAP training across European countries. While some countries officially recognize OAP as a subspecialty or special competence, others offer additional training within general psychiatry residencies.
