Bipolar Affective Disorder (BAD), often termed bipolar disorder (BD), is a chronic mood disorder characterized by episodes of mania/hypomania and depression, interspersed with periods of euthymia. The disorder has substantial morbidity, mortality, and socio-economic burden. This paper reviews current knowledge on its epidemiology, clinical features, etiology (genetic, neurobiological, environmental), diagnostic criteria including differential diagnoses, evidence-based treatments (pharmacological and psychological), prognosis, recent advances in research. Case reports play a key role in ilustrating the clinical diversity of BD and guiding individualized care. Key findings include that prevalence lies around 1-2% for bipolar I and II disorder in many populations, early age of onset (adolescence / early adulthood), strong genetic contributions, environmental risk moderators, and that combination treatments (therapy + medication) yield better outcomes. Recent research is refining subtypes via genetic clustering, exploring neuroanatomical correlates, and developing novel therapies.
