Synthesis, characterization and reactivity of [(Z)-2′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se2

Novel [(Z)-2′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se2 (1) was obtained, structurally characterized, both in solution and in solid state, and the reactivity was investigated in reactions with MCl2 (M = Zn, Cd and Hg). Compound 1 and the metal complexes [ZnCl2{[(Z)-2′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se2}] (2), [CdCl2{[(Z)-2′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se2}] (3) and [HgCl2{[(Z)-2′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se2}] (4) displays similar photophysical properties, the presence of oxazolone rings on the phenyl substituents, covalently bonded to the selenium atoms, induced a bathochromic shift in the UV-Vis spectra of the investigated compounds. The supramolecular architecture supported by intermolecular C−H∙∙∙O and π∙∙∙π interactions was observed in solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies
