Applications of Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory to improve nursing practice: A narrative review

Comfort is one of the fundamental human needs and a core concept in the nursing profession, playing a significant role in enhancing care quality and patient satisfaction. Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory, as both a theoretical and practical framework, defines comfort in three forms—relief, ease, and transcendence—across four dimensions: physical, psychospiritual, sociocultural, and environmental. This theory encourages nurses to adopt a holistic approach to identify patients' multidimensional needs and deliver targeted interventions. It has shown notable positive impacts in various clinical settings, particularly among patients with chronic conditions, pregnant women, children with psychosocial needs, and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Interventions based on this theory have been associated with pain and anxiety reduction, improved sleep quality, increased patient satisfaction, and enhanced care experiences. Furthermore, attention to the sociocultural and environmental aspects of comfort has improved therapeutic communication and fostered a sense of belonging and peace among patients.
