One of the key structures in the modern Internet is the Domain Name System (DNS). Its role is to convert machine IP addresses into a human-friendly domain format. Since the system was not originally designed for global use, a number of shortcomings appeared during its popularization, particularly related to cyber security: accessibility and privacy. System publicity and hierarchy are often misused with censorship purposes. This article discusses the feasibility of using an alternative decentralized protocol called Handshake. It departs from the traditional hierarchical DNS in the context of registrations, ownership and control of domain names through the use of Blockchain distributed ledger technology. This change makes the structure decentralized, however, a number of disadvantages arise at the same time. Handshake domains require a special approach for their use by ordinary users and introduce reputational and technology risks.
