Kovalevsky contains two parts: a psychological essay (a short essay on the normal mental life of a man) and a criminal psychology (criminal psychology). According to the plan outlined by the author, the second part will set out the general morbid deviations in the mental life of a person, having contact with the court (special judicial psychiatry).
