Collaborative procurement of the European Spallation Source in Sweden

Lennart Stenman, Jan-Anders Larsson, Steve Wade · Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering · 2018

The European Spallation Source is a €1·8 billion neutron source being built at Lund in Sweden. On completion in 2023 it will be the most powerful in the world, providing a giant ‘molecular microscope’ for studying all kinds of natural and man-made materials. This paper describes the collaborative procurement approach adopted in the delivery of this highly complex project. In particular it allowed construction to start before the scientific design and radiation safety analysis was finalised, helping to ensure delivery on time and within budget.
