Sustainable roads for fragile states in Africa

Better roads are vital for the free movement of people and goods, and for guaranteeing access to markets and essential social services. This, in turn, leads to improved security and promotes economic development. Better roads are particularly relevant in post-conflict and post-disaster contexts, such as in fragile states in Africa where the significance of a sustainable transportation system goes beyond a question of simply improving connectivity; it can also create the fertile soil for peace and stability, and promote inclusive economic development through appropriate gender consideration and sound health and safety practices. This paper is based on the authors’ professional engagement in developing countries with various organisations. It includes three case studies on delivering sustainable transport solutions in Africa with the United Nations Office for Project Services.
