Under EU legislation for bathing waters, Northumbrian Water has invested £150 million to provide environmental improvements for the 34 designated bathing beaches along its 180 km coastline. Now, to comply with urban waste-water rules, the company is spending another £200 million to provide further treatment to coastal discharges. All this will lead to a 200% increase in sewage sludge over the next six years, none of which can now be dumped at sea. The company has thus built a state-of-the-art £70 million regional sludge treatment centre on Teesside which turns the sludge into dried fertilizer pellets. In the near future it is Northumbrian Water's intention to use the dried sludge to generate fuel gas, making the centre virtually self-sufficient.
