South West Water has spent £900 million since 1989 to ensure that all its 134 designated bathing beaches meet the EU bathing water standard. The company's Clean Sweep coastal clean-up programme covers 33 sites along a coastline of which 70% is subject to environmental protection. This paper focuses on the planning, design and construction of two innovative schemes to provide first-time sewage treatment at Penzance and St Ives in Cornwall and at Lyme Regis in Dorset.
