The new Hong Kong International Airport was built on a remote island site at Chek Lap Kok in just seven and a half years. This paper describes how construction progressed from the initial advance works contract awarded in January 1991 to the opening of the completed, state-of-the-art airport and its massive 515 000 m2 terminal building in July 1998. It details the HK$ 44 billion package of contracts let by the main client, the Hong Kong Airport Authority, and the methods of construction management used to ensure safe completion both on time and within budget. It also addresses the unique construction support facilities and services which were provided by the Authority to support the 21 000 people working on site during the peak construction phase.
