The A1 at Wetherby, West Yorkshire has been a notorious bottleneck for many years on the UK's primary north–south route east of the Pennine ridge. A £71 million improvement scheme was completed at the end of 2009, including upgrading the 10 km trunk road to motorway status. This paper focuses on the innovative sequential demolition techniques developed to reduce traffic delays, and explains how a significant reduction in carbon dioxide output was achieved through well-planned and effective reuse of demolition and earthworks materials.
