San Diego stress ribbon bridge sets new world record

The world's longest stress ribbon bridge opened in San Diego, California, USA in May 2009. The David Kreitzer Lake Hodges bicycle and pedestrian bridge uses high-strength steel cables embedded in an ultra-slender concrete deck to span 300 m across a sensitive lake habitat within a nature park. It forms a vital link in an 88 km nature trail and enables cycle commuters to get off the busy I-15 freeway. This paper describes how a stress ribbon bridge was chosen for this site, the design process and how the bridge was constructed.
