The contrast between A'Samaliah heritage island and Abu Dhabi city 12 km to the east could not be more stark. Unlike the degree-perfect conditions maintained inside the city's glass-walled, energy-hungry towers, the island's traditionally designed buildings rely on thermal mass and natural ventilation to keep indoor temperatures within an acceptable range. This paper introduces seven sustainability questions that Middle East infrastructure needs to address if it is to have a viable future, and uses A'Samaliah as a model of how it can be achieved in practice.
