New approach puts Tube station upgrade back on track

Keith Sibley · Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering · 2009

Tube Lines – a joint-venture company between Amey and Bechtel – is now six years into a 30-year public–private partnership with London Underground to maintain and upgrade all trains and infrastructure on the critical Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. A total of £550 million alone is being spent on upgrading most of the lines’ 100 stations. This paper describes how major changes in traditional procurement and working practices over the first few years have resulted in significant productivity improvements, including time and cost reductions of over 30%.
