One of the biggest problems to re-establishing communities after wars is hazardous ground, not in the traditional geotechnical sense but in the more insidious and potentially lethal form of buried landmines and unexploded shells. Despite all the recent advances in military and civil engineering technology, it seems there is still no substitute for slow, manual methods when it comes to making a mined area genuinely safe for people to live and work in again. This paper describes the painstaking techniques developed by Halo Trust, the world's largest humanitarian demining organisation, and reveals the limited effectiveness of modern technology to meet this vital human need.
