Flood risk—the impact of climate change

D. Richardson · Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering · 2002

Designing and planning for flood alleviation and management means assessing future probabilities of inherently unpredictable events. That unpredictability is increased by the uncertainties of potential future climate change—which over the next 75 years could without appropriate adaptions increase the risk from flooding in parts of Britain by as much as 400%. Engineers and others involved in designing and appraising projects need to be aware of climate change predictions, of the guidance that has been provided as the basis of an appropriate precautionary response, and of the considerations taken into account in its development.
