Many would argue that coal as a fuel has had its day, that environmentally friendly renewable energy technologies are the only way forward, or that a nuclear revival is inevitable. But the proponents of coal can also point to major technical improvements that have resulted in improved efficiency and environmental performance of modern generation plant. This paper explores some of the engineering issues surrounding the possible future role of coal and concludes it will still be a major source of energy in 2050. Against that background, the paper goes on to examine how engineering advances can make substantial improvements to the environmental characteristics of coal combustion.
