Information technology has transformed many aspects of our daily lives, and revolutionized industries in both the manufacturing and service sectors. However, within the construction industry, the changes have so far been less radical. This paper considers the impact that IT has currently had on the construction industry and demonstrates how novel design, visualization and communication techniques are beginning to allow both specialists and lay people to impart ideas more effectively, with consequently quicker, better and more informed decisions. It also considers some of the barriers that remain before the use of truly ‘virtual project teams’ can become a reality.
