London's successful bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games resulted in over £60 million of investment into the canals and rivers of the lower Lea valley. This paper describes the largest regeneration and restoration programme ever undertaken on Britain's inland waterway network, with a massive clean-up operation followed by new locks, river walls, towpaths, bridges and habitats. After providing an attractive waterside backdrop to the games, the waterways are now a major feature of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. They will soon be opened up to public navigation for the first time in decades and are expected to bring many thousands of waterborne visitors to the area.
