London 2012 legacy: design and reuse of temporary equestrian platforms

Paul Pennington · Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering · 2014

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games equestrian events were staged at the historic Greenwich Royal Park. The temporary facilities had to be designed to be constructed, operated and demounted with minimal disruption or long-term effects to the park, at the same time as meeting the exacting international requirements for surfacing and construction tolerances. This paper describes the innovative modular plastic base and sub-base units that were used to create the equestrian platform, and explains how these have all since been removed and reused on a variety of commercial and leisure projects in Britain and Holland.
