Giant new Kattupalli yard and port puts India at forefront of Asian shipbuilding

Tatamangalam S. Ananthakumar, Karatha Jayesh · Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering · 2014

What looks set to be one of the largest shipyards in Asia was officially opened in January 2013. The £405 million Kattupalli project is a massive, state-of-the-art shipbuilding facility on a vast 5 km2 site on the east coast of India. Combining a shipyard, modular fabrication facility and port makes the project unique in India. Construction was completed in just 34 months, despite the site being hit by three major cyclones. This paper provides an overview of various civil engineering innovations and alternatives adopted by the project team in delivering this challenging, state-of-the-art maritime facility.
