Collaborative planning is a recognised Lean technique that has been used in the manufacture of building products but less frequently on infrastructure construction projects. It seeks to drive out waste and deliver construction first time, every time. This paper describes the origin and successful implementation of collaborative planning on the complex Borough viaduct project in central London. Successes included a programme saving of 8 weeks within the first 6 months on site, with associated cost savings. It also provided complete buy-in to the project from all involved.
