Few experiments on the synthesis of chiral ionic liquids designed for the undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum have been published. This paper describes an experiment for the multi-step synthesis of chiral ionic liquids that can be completed in most standard undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories. The products can be easily analyzed using melting point, low-resolution or benchtop NMR, and polarimetry. In addition, the synthesis of four compounds with distinct 1H NMR peaks for differentiation provides several concepts in one experiment. This experiment is an introduction to the expanding field of ionic liquid research suitable for an undergraduate organic chemistry course.
