Emergency resternotomy in the cardiac surgery intensive care unit is associated with significant mortality and major morbidity. Timing and coordination of the personnel involved in this life-threatening situation are essential to provide a timely and effective response. Our institutional standardized approach based on Cardiac Surgery Advanced Life Support guidelines application is presented.
