It is a good time to revisit a common, but poorly understood symptom as National Tinnitus Week nears (9–15 February 2009). Tinnitus is defined as an awareness of a sound sensation not caused by an external sound stimulus. It affects about 10% of the population. For most affected, the symptom is not particularly intrusive, although 0.4% have tinnitus that severely affects their life quality. Tinnitus can have almost any quality such as hissing, buzzing, ringing, whistling or even complex sounds. The tinnitus may be in one or both ears, the middle of the head, or may even seem to come from somewhere outside the body.
