Prescribing and practice nursing

Anne Baird · Practice Nursing · 1999

The recommendation that certain groups of nurses should be granted limited prescribing rights was first proposed in the Neighbourhood Nursing Review, (DHSS, 1986).The review team noted that district nurses in particular wasted much time requesting prescriptions from GPs, and proposed that a limited list of items which could be prescribed by nurses should be devised. This suggestion was taken forward in the Report of the Advisory Group on Nurse Prescribing (DoH, 1989), which examined the circumstances in which nurses should be able to prescribe. Anne Baird gives an overview of the nurse prescribing situation to date
