Locally recurrent rectal cancer: the nursing role pre-treatment

Claire Taylor · Gastrointestinal Nursing · 2016

Treatment options for individuals with locally recurrent rectal cancers have improved considerably over the past 10 years. However, deciding on the best management approach can be complicated, as multimodality regimens are often used, while surgery, when proposed, may well involve a radical and complex resection, which may not be suitable. A multidisciplinary team approach is an essential requirement in the management of locally recurrent rectal cancers, and the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is an integral part of this team, helping patients navigate the health-care system, understand the treatment options available and cope with any associated concerns and symptoms. The invaluable role that CNSs often play in the care of these patients needs wider acknowledgement and further articulation.
