Advanced nursing practice in colorectal and stoma care

Abby Barnwell · Gastrointestinal Nursing · 2015

The role of the advanced nurse practitioner (ANP) offers an exciting opportunity to consider innovative methods of delivering care to colorectal and stoma patients in order to meet the changing health needs of these patients with long-term conditions and those living with the effects of cancer treatments. Nurses in the UK are facing increasing pressure from Trusts to demonstrate their value; it is imperative that time is spent reflecting on practice and identifying the unique contribution of the ANP to patient care. This article reviews the important role of the ANP in colorectal and stoma care. Nurses in these specialties of care have an in-depth knowledge of their patient group and are best placed to evaluate patient pathways and predict actions that will have positive outcomes on health and quality and that are responsive to patient needs.
