Welcome to GIN in 2010. I hope that you have settled back into a familiar pattern in this new decade. What a start to 2010 we have all had! It seems only a short while since the eve of the New Year when many of us will have made resolutions for the forthcoming year. Many of these will have been related to lifestyle choices or personal goals to be achieved. How can we forget those 2 weeks of inclement weather and the resulting pressures on all public services, especially the NHS, which saw nurses continuing to cope with significant pressures in difficult circumstances? Those challenges remain for the foreseeable future and certainly until a general election will decide the direction of plans for healthcare for the subsequent 5 years. The focus of such future services will depend on which of the political parties forms a government. What is certain is that the demands and pressures on the NHS are unlikely to relent.
