More than half the UK population will go through menopause at some point in their lives, but for decades, menopause has been a taboo subject with a lack of both wider public knowledge and access to evidence-based treatment. In addition, many women will be managing their perimenopause and menopause alongside comorbidities, including epilepsy. Having worked as an epilepsy specialist nurse in primary care with 6 years of experience, and after qualifying as an advanced nurse practitioner, I continued to see people with epilepsy for a regular review in primary care. The author now works at Newson Health – a large menopause clinic – and believes all women should receive the information and care they need to make an informed choice about managing the menopause. This article sets out what menopause is, and covers diagnosis, treatment and lifestyle measures, as well as considerations when caring for women with epilepsy experiencing perimenopause and menopause.
