A multidisciplinary approach to Parkinson's disease

Fiona Lindop · British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing · 2012

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition with motor and non-motor symptoms resulting in a complex range of problems, and a multidisciplinary team approach offering integrated care is indicated. The importance of an understanding of the function and dysfunction of the basal ganglia is described, which forms the basis for the use of cues and strategies which all team members can employ, and the Derby Parkinson's Disease Service model of multidisciplinary team working is described. Individual roles within the team are provided as examples and the importance of evidence-based practice and the use of outcome measures to ensure efficacy of practice are highlighted.
