The management of dysphagia after stroke

This article provides an overview of the management of dysphagia (a swallowing disorder) after stroke. It includes an examination of the normal swallow, what can go wrong with the swallow after a stroke, current national guidelines on best practice during the acute phase, screening for swallow impairments, instrumental assessment including videofluoroscopy and fibreoptic evaluation, both compensatory and direct rehabilitation of the impaired swallow and the prognosis for recovery of swallow function in people who have experienced a stroke.
