Live surgery: Education or entertainment?

May 2009 saw neurosurgery being broadcast live on television for the first time—breaking new ground, but raising a number of questions. It is possible to accept that the patients undergoing the surgical procedures being aired had given informed consent and there must have been ethical debates that occurred before the programmes were scheduled, but what are the potential issues raised by this type of broadcast?
