My friend, a radio producer, was standing outside the cafe where we had planned to meet, talking on her mobile phone. She gestured me in. Five minutes later, she came and joined me. ‘That was so frustrating,’ she said. ‘I was talking to a colleague who can't understand why her programme idea hasn't been commissioned. She's retired, so she's working on a freelance basis—she has a pension already! Eighteen months ago, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which turned out to be benign.
