Last week I was speaking at a one-day conference, at which the new national guidelines for the management of neurogenic bowel dysfunction after spinal cord injury were launched by the Spinal Cord Injuries Centres of the UK and Ireland (2009), which will be the subject of a future paper in BJNN. Delegates had the privilege of listening to the patients' perspective of bowel care from those who had suffered spinal injuries at various levels. One of the consistent comments and a situation commonly faced by patients is nurses refusing to perform manual removal of faeces because this was either seen to be ‘degrading’ or not permitted.
