Functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a very recent development within the field of neurosciences, with the first papers being published in the early 1990s. fMRI enables researchers and clinicians to map brain function rather than to only observe the brain tissue in a static form as is routinely done now via conventional MRI.
