A major public awareness campaign around stroke is now well underway. I am sure that the powerful imagery of the television advertisements depicting a fire spreading inexorably through a brain as the individual develops facial and arm weakness cannot have escaped your attention. Anecdotally they appear to have caught the attention of the public as well—stroke nurse specialists and consultant colleagues have reported a significant increase in the number of patients attending and one colleague suggested that referrals to the stroke service had doubled.
