Asking for patients' musical preferences

Sue Woodward · British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing · 2008

How often do we ask relatives to bring in music for brain-injured patients or ask which radio stations they prefer? Critical care nurses are aware of the dangers of sensory overload that constant noise may lead to. We are also well aware that hearing is the last sense to be lost, following a reduction in level of consciousness, and the first one to come back. So our unconscious patients may well still be able to hear all that is going on around them. While nurses may play music or put on a radio with the intention of reassuring a patient who is comatose by surrounding them with familiar sound, or hoping to stimulate a damaged brain, are we using music and sound indiscriminately? Could we enhance recovery from brain injury by using music in a more targeted manner?
