As the time for the reading of the Human Fertilization and Embryology Bill in the House of Commons draws near, controversy has again been sparked over the ethics of creating human/animal hybrid embryos. No one can have missed the debate about the issue over the Easter weekend, when leaders of the Catholic Church spoke out against the Bill, claiming that allowing the formation of hybrid embryos was akin to creating monsters (BBC News, 2008).This criticism came amid reports of successful treatment of Parkinson′s disease in mice from stem cells created within a therapeutically cloned embryo (Tabar et al, 2008). The Church has called for MPs to be allowed a free vote on the issue and one Labour MP who is a practising Catholic was reported as saying that she would have to be accountable to her conscience. I thought MPs were supposed to be accountable to and represent the views of their constituents and it begs the question whether their views on the issue have been canvassed.
