January has seen the announcement of a review of care provision across local authorities in England. When interviewed on BBC breakfast news, Ivan Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Health, conceded that care provision for people with dementia was essentially a postcode lottery. There have been numerous cases reported recently where care services have been withdrawn from vulnerable, elderly people following a raft of reassessments of their care needs. Mr Lewis highlighted the need for a national framework, and foreshadowed a new strategy for carers which will be launched in the spring, in partnership with the Alzheimer′s Society.
