The first week of December has seen much publicity about the new government campaign to raise awareness of stroke which is to be launched in February 2009. The FAST test has been promoted by The Stroke Association for some time and yet many people still do not recognize the warning signs of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA), and do not treat it as a medical emergency. This can delay access to scanning and potentially life-saving thrombolysis. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the UK and the single largest cause of disability. There is significant evidence that thrombolysis, where appropriate, can dramatically improve outcomes from stroke if administered within 3 hours, so it is vital that people seek help immediately when this is happening to them.
