Patients' stories are achieving recognition as significant sources of knowledge about the illness experience and are being increasingly acknowledged as important aspects of evidence on which to base health-care interventions. Patients often recount their stories as a way of offering information and support for others in similar situations, but their stories can also provide nurses with insights to enhance their understanding of the effects of illness on a patient and those closest to them. In this paper, key sources of first-hand accounts of the illness experience are outlined, before introducing the potential uses and limitations of patients' stories in neuroscience nursing. Future discussions could identify the most effective ways of incorporating patients' stories into the planning and delivery of health-care services at all levels.
