Each year Edinburgh hosts a variety of official book, fringe, film, jazz and blues, and television festivals. However, one gathering which regularly creeps under the media radar is the Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival (EIEF). Last year the front of its dayglo publicity leaflet featured a generously trousered, baseball-hatted youth who was plainly enjoying some interactive entertainment. It also carried the assurance that the EIEF was ‘the essential event for videogame fans’. Inside it answered its own question (‘Serious about having fun?’) with the exhortation to ‘go play games’.
