Nursing by SMS: Support via text

Sue Thomas · British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing · 2007

How times change. Many years ago, when I was working as a district nursing sister, a nurse working in my locality was disciplined for contacting patients by telephone rather than conducting face-to-face visits. Her rationale for calling patients rather than actually visiting them in person, was that she was giving the patients ‘support’ rather than hands-on care. Many of these individuals had long-term conditions and she was trying to encourage them to ‘keep well’. Nevertheless, at that time this method of working was certainly not acceptable to management and she was disciplined. I trained, as you will see from my picture, many years ago when we were by and large an NHS that did not really empower patients to ‘self-care’, with developments such as the Expert Patients Programme not yet appearing on the NHS radar.
